Montreal police said the stabbing happened at about 1:05 a.m., just as the bar, located near the intersection of Decarie Boulevard, was preparing to close down.
A dispute erupted between several people and the victim was stabbed several times in the back, said Const. Yannick Ouimet.
"The victim didn't notice anything until he actually walked outside of the place," Ouimet said. "That's when staff members, who were outside ensuring everyone's security, noticed the victim wasn't feeling well, so they approached him."
Ouimet said the employees waved over police officers who were across the street and an ambulance was called.
The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition. His injuries were initially considered life-threatening, but his condition has stabilized, police said.
The suspects fled the scene. Police said witnesses described them as a man and a woman in their 20s.
Ouimet said it's unclear what sparked the dispute.
"Our investigators haven't met with the victim," he said. "In all of these cases, that's our best witness."
The investigation is ongoing.
