TORONTO - Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista sat out Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox to rest a sore right ankle.

The outfielder tweaked the ankle legging out a double play in the eighth inning of a 10-8 win over Cleveland on Thursday. He did not appear in the ninth inning, saying later it was nothing serious.

"It's much better right now than when I woke up and when I got here today," Bautista told reporters prior to Friday's game. "But I still believe the proper precaution was taken — take today off and see how it feels tomorrow (Saturday) and possible play tomorrow."

He said he was sore rather than in pain.

"It's the right move and it's early in the season. And I'd rather do that and take one or two days off instead of trying to play on it and then have to take a full week or 10 days off."

Rajai Davis replaced him in right field Friday.

"Hopefully it's just tonight," said manager John Gibbons. "And that's all he needs. It's a big bat."

Gibbons said if Bautista plays Saturday, he will DH.

Bautista is 3-for-12 with two home runs in three games this season.
