TORONTO - Toronto city council has unanimously approved a review of its solid waste operations after a five-year-old girl was struck and killed by a city garbage truck.

Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was hit by the garbage truck while walking home from school on March 7 in the city's east end (near East Haven Drive and Cliffside Drive.)

Coun. Gary Crawford — the city councillor for the ward — asked for the review.

He says the city should look at policies, equipment and the routing of its trucks to make sure such an incident doesn't happen again.

Crawford says the review will examine a number of issues, such as locations of sidewalks and crossing guards.
