CARONPORT, Sask. - A private Christian post-secondary institute in southwestern Saskatchewan will soon be allowed to grant a bachelor of arts degree in the humanities.

Premier Brad Wall says Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, just west of Moose Jaw, is being recognized for its academic excellence.

The universities of Saskatchewan and Regina have been the only post-secondary schools allowed to grant degrees, other than theological degrees.

But the government passed legislation last fall to allow it to expand the number of schools allowed to do so.

Briercrest's authorization is effective in July and is to be reviewed in five years.
