AIRDRIE, Alta. - An Alberta sheriff and a passerby got more than they bargained for during a violent encounter with a pair of motorists.

RCMP from Airdrie, Alta., say the sheriff was responding to a complaint of an erratic driver on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Carstairs and tried to pull the vehicle over.

However, the truck with two male occupants swerved at the sheriff's vehicle, causing a collision that sent the officer's vehicle into a cable barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes.

The suspects fled the scene but broke down on a nearby rural road.

A passing motorist who stopped to offer assistance was assaulted by the two men, who stole his truck and fled again.

RCMP support teams and the Calgary police helicopter located the stolen vehicle and officers on the ground managed to take two suspects into custody.

Both suspects are known to police and charges are pending.

Neither the sheriff nor the passing motorist was seriously hurt.
