A junior high school in California is getting a lot of heat over a controversial dress code.
Last week, a school official at Kenilworth Junior High in Petaluma, California, told girls that they weren't allowed to wear pants that were "too tight."
The reason? The pants distracted the boys.
Naturally, students were furious with the administration's new rules.
"It takes away like half of my clothes because I have a lot of yoga pants and leggings, so everyone's kind of like mad about it," said Makenna Mattei, a student, to ktvu.com
Another student said, "We didn't think it was fair how we have all these restrictions on our clothing while boys didn't have to sit through it at all."
As a result of the outcry, the school relented and changed its policy saying girls could wear skinny jeans and yoga pants but not leggings.
“The concern is we don’t want undergarments showing,” Emily Dunnagan, the school's principal, told Patch. “The goal is to teach kids to respect themselves and dress appropriately.”
The new policy lets girls sport leggings "with shorts or paired with a skirt or dress."
An outraged writer at the website Jezebel wrote: "Girls are being punished for the most ridiculous of reasons — that a boy might be distracted by her feminine form. Deal with it, people. It's called life."
This isn't the first weird (and some would say archaic) rule applied to women and their clothes; a French law banning women from wearing trousers was recently repealed.
