Saanich fires prompt search for second arsonist

Police are hunting for a second suspect after a series of fires north of Victoria last night, including one that destroyed a restaurant in Saanich.

In total, five suspicious fires were set within a five-block radius, starting at about 10 p.m. PT on Thursday night in a dumpster near the Mayfair shopping mall.

About an hour later, flames were spotted at the ABC Restaurant just blocks away.

No one was seriously hurt, but the restaurant was extensively damaged and 100 people staying in the attached Accent Inn had to move to another hotel for the night.

Shortly after that, a fire was reported in condo nearby.

Sgt. Steve Eassie says police arrested a 25-year-old Victoria man early this morning, but another suspicious fire broke out while he was in custody.

“That's what leads us to perhaps believe that there was perhaps another person involved in these previous incidents,” Eassie said.

Eassie says homeowners are being asked to keep an eye out for any unusual activity or people in their neighbourhoods.
