Toronto teens Eamonn O'Keeffe and Patrick Y. Lee have won a contest to create a Heritage Minute, those videos that illustrate pivotal moments in Canadian history. The "Got A Minute" contest was run by the Historica-Dominion Institute, the group that created the original minutes.
O'Keeffe and Lee even got a bit of historical accuracy by shooting the video at Toronto's Fort York, where O'Keeffe volunteers, he told the CBC.
"The Winter March" tells the story of the 104th Regiment's march from New Brunswick to Kingston, Ont. in early 1813. More than 550 men marched for 50 days and 1,100 kilometres in the dead of winter through rough terrain. The regiment only lost one man and was crucial to the defence of Ontario from American troops during the War of 1812.
The march was re-enacted by members of the Canadian Forces and history buffs earlier this year.
O'Keeffe used excerpts from the journal of Lieutenant John Le Couteur, just 18 at the time of the march, as narration for his heritage minute.
