Exploding propane tanks on the roof of the Quillorama bowling alley appear to have fuelled a fire that consumed at least 10 businesses in a strip mall in Châteauguay this afternoon.

Firefighters from 16 different regions were called to the scene of that huge fire at the Maple Shopping Centre in Châteauguay, just south of Montreal.

Fire officials say the fire broke out at 12:14 p.m. on Friday, while roofers were doing repairs to the bowling alley.

"There were many propane tanks on the roof," said Luc Lapointe, the operations chief for the Châteauguay fire department.

Lapointe said at least two blew up while firefighters were combating the fire.

The fire spread quickly, due in part to strong winds.

By late afternoon, firefighters had the fire under control. There were no injuries reported.

This was the scene shortly after the fire began at 12:14 p.m.
