VANCOUVER - The B.C. Lions have signed non-import fullback Rolly Lumbala to a contract extension.

Lumbala was selected by the Lions in the second round (ninth overall) in the 2008 draft and has appeared in 81 games over the past five seasons.

Lumbala plays primarily on special teams, where he has 56 career tackles. He had six rushes for 32 yards and a touchdown and a career-high seven receptions for 66 yards in 2012.

"Rolly plays a very significant role on our club," Lions head coach Mike Benevides said in a release. "He's a leader who does everything asked of him whether it's on special teams or on offence and he has developed into the kind of leader we knew he would be when we drafted him."

Lumbala, who was born in Libreville, Gabon, but grew up in Calgary, played varsity football at the University of Idaho.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version had Lumbala recording 56 tackles last season instead of over his career.
