Terror Suspects Appear In Court In Toronto, Montreal

The two men who are suspects in an alleged terror plot aimed at VIA trains are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

An RCMP spokeswoman says Montreal resident Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, is to appear in court in Montreal on Tuesday. Raed Jaser, 35, a Toronto-area resident, appeared in court and was denied bail. It was earlier reported that Esseghaier was to appear in court in Toronto.

UPDATE: Both suspects appeared in court Tuesday and were remanded in custody.

Photos have emerged of Esseghaier and on Monday, CTV reporters snapped photos of the terror suspect being escorted by police at the Buttonville Airport in Ontario.

The RCMP say that the two men had support or links to al Qaeda elements in Iran, a claim fiercely denied by Iran.

Esseghaier is a PhD student in Montreal, doing doctoral research in biotechnology at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique.

"I actually told my wife, keep an eye on this guy, he's dangerous," Faouzi Bellili, a labmate, told CBC.

Both men are not Canadian citizens.
