They fight, the drink too much, they puke, and sometimes they even get themselves ejected. They're Toronto Blue Jays fans and they're getting a reputation as some of the rowdiest and most unruly supporters in the league.
The Jays have been American League also-rans for the last few decades and both the team and its fans have been out of the baseball spotlight. But a series of high-profile signings in the off-season have made the team a possible pennant contender and now a series of incidents have also put fans in the spotlight.
Yahoo's Big League Stew blog catalogued some of the more boorish example of Jays fan behaviour, which included one horrific example of a fan throwing up.
The Toronto Star spoke to former Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun who also said the team's fans have definitely gotten worse.
“They’re getting drunker, and drunker and drunker and it’s because fans are getting younger and younger,” he told the Star.
This is despite the fact that Toronto fans pay some of the highest prices in the league for beer.
Zaun also singled out fans who throw objects onto the field.
"As a player who played for 16 years, anytime I saw a fan throw something onto the field, I got them ejected,” he said.
The Star also reported that a fan was ejected from a recent Jays game on the word of Yankees security. The fan was reportedly heckling the visiting New York team and throwing objects at them.
But despite these incidents, Jays fans have a long way to go before taking the worst fans in baseball crown away from anybody. The Atlantic's Steve Tuttle says Washington Nationals fans are some of the most inconsiderate in the league.
But 'inconsiderate' would probably be a compliment for Philadelphia Phillies fans, who have a lasting reputation for horrific behaviour (see throwing batteries at players, vomiting on kids and more!).
"All told, Philadelphia stadiums house the most monstrous collection of humanity outside of the federal penal system," baseball legend Pete Rose once said.
We also have to bring up fans of the Cleveland Indians who went on a beer-fueled rampage at a special 10-cent beer night back in 1974. Fans streaked, pelted players with firecrackers and punched a reporter in the face. Oh, they also drank some 60,000 glasses of beer.
Jays fans, you still have a long, long way to fall.
