'Great Gatsby' Brooks Brothers Fashion: Retailer Takes Style Cues From Movie's 1920s Style (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

"The Great Gatsby" is one of literature's great classics and now that it's being turned into a film (for the second time) the focus has shifted not just to Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan's on-screen chemistry, but to the period costumes.

What many people don't know is that "Gatsby" author F. Scott Fitzgerald was a Brooks Brothers customer. To celebrate this connection, the American retailer has launched a "Gatsby" collection which is inspired by the costumes designed by "Gatsby" costume designer, Catherine Martin.

"It seemed a very natural partnership to collaborate with Catherine," said Brooks Brothers spokesperson, Deepak Chopra, to the Canadian Press. Almost 500 costumes were made for the Baz Lurhmann-directed "Gatsby" and all the men in the film wear Brooks Brothers clothing.

"That era, the 1920s and '30s doesn't get done very often," said set and costume designer, Sarah Armstrong. "The silhouette is different so it gives fashion designers a really big opportunity to create a different silhouette for women and for men."

The coats, for example, were longer in the 1920s than today's modern suits.

"Gatsby" star Carey Mulligan modeled '20s-inspired looks for the May issue of Vogue, including a turban, a green velvet column dress, a feathered headdress, long gloves and plenty of diamond jewelry.

The film, which opens on May 10 and also stars "Spider-Man's" Tobey Maguire, has been getting a lot of attention over its gorgeous-looking trailer, Beyoncé's controversial Amy Winehouse cover and Lana Dey Rey's "Young & Beautiful" track.

Regardless of whether or not you enjoy the movie, the film is sure to look breathtaking.
