Vancouver police shoot alleged knife-wielding woman

A woman who lunged at officers with a knife was shot in Vancouver's Grandview-Woodland neighborhood, near Commercial Drive this morning, according to police.

Officials from B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office says Vancouver police officers responded to a call of a "distraught female with a knife" at a home on Lakewood Drive near William Street at around 10:30 a.m. PT Thursday.

The woman allegedly confronted the officers with a sharp object, and was shot. She was taken to hospital, and Vancouver Police Department officials said her condition is stable.

The IIO, which investigates police incidents that result in serious harm or death, sent a forensic specialist and five other investigators to the scene.

A number of witnesses were rounded up and taken to sit on a parked transit bus while police collected their statements.

Police blocked off Lakewood Drive and investigators placed evidence markers on the street next to blood stains, piece of clothing and a pair of scissors.
