Federal New Democrats are toasting another Mom-ber of Parliament.
Rosane Doré Lefebvre, who represents the Laval riding of Alfred-Pellan, has given birth to a baby girl.
Her partner George Soule, a member of NDP leader Thomas Mulcair’s press team, tweeted the arrival of Madeleine Sylvie Kathryn Soule on Tuesday evening.
And he couldn’t resist pointing out she shares a birthday with the prime minister.
“True Fact: Willie Nelson and Stephen Harper share a birthday – today,” he wrote. “Much more importantly, Madeleine Sylvie Kathryn Soule was born today. Maman and baby are doing well. Dad is somewhere over the moon.”
Lefebvre, 28, was first elected in 2011 and joined the shadow cabinet as deputy critic for public safety in April of 2012.
She is the second NDP MP to give birth since the last federal election, when a surprising crop of young politicians were elected.
Her colleague, Quebec MP Sana Hassainia, gave birth to a baby boy in November of 2011.
“My happiness is complete,” Hassainia wrote on her website at the time.
In February of 2012, Hassainia caused a minor commotion after she brought her son Skander-Jack — named after late NDP leader Jack Layton — inside the House of Commons for a vote.
When parliamentary pages brought her a message from Speaker Andrew Scheer, who was apparently concerned that MPs were snapping photos against House rules, she thought she was being removed because of the child.
She later chalked the whole thing up to a misunderstanding.
In fact, members can see deductions from their $157,731 salaries if absent from the House for 21 days, unless they are sick, on official public business or serving in the military.
Luckily, that won’t be an issue for Lefebvre. Proud papa Soule will reportedly take paternity leave to care for the newborn.
In 1987, Liberal Sheila Copps made history as the first woman to give birth while sitting as a federal member of Parliament.
