3 presumed dead after weekend canoeing incidents

Authorities say three people are missing following two separate boating incidents in Quebec over the weekend.

In the Matapédia region, a Rimouski man is presumed to have drowned in the St-Léon river.

The man, in his 40s, has not been seen since his canoe capsized on Saturday. A friend who was in the boat managed to make it safely to shore.

Search efforts, which included a helicopter, were continuing today.

In Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, authorities are searching for a couple who are also presumed to have drowned.

The couple, both in their 50s, were reported missing by their son when they failed to return to their chalet.

The couple’s canoe was found partly submerged in the Mistassibi river and their ATV was discovered on the river bank.

Authorities were continuing their search efforts on Sunday.
