9 guns stolen in Abbotsford home invasion

Three masked men armed with a metal bar broke into the home of an elderly Abbotsford couple Tuesday afternoon, tied them up and stole nine firearms and a large amount of ammunition, police say.

The thieves left other valuables behind in the residence on the 28,000 block of Starr Road, said Abbotsford police Const. Ian MacDonald.

"Both of the victims were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and were obviously shaken from the incident," he said.

MacDonald says the couple, in their 70s, are upstanding citizens, and that all the firearms are registered.

MacDonald doubts the thieves were gang members, but said police were concerned about what might happen to the guns.

"One of the concerns we always have is what is the ultimate destination point for these firearms," said MacDonald.

"Certainly one of the considerations in either resale or exchange could be with gangs or people who are drug involved," he said.

He cautions people with firearms to be careful when letting others know they have guns in their possession.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225.
