A 21-year-old graduate from Nova Scotia's Acadia University fell from a third-storey balcony and died of a traumatic head injury while vacationing with friends in Cancun earlier this week, police in Mexico say.
They say alcohol was a factor in the death of Sydney Taylor.
Acadia Student Union president Matthew Rios said Taylor was a political science student.
She was among a group of more than 120 students from the university staying at the Hotel Gran Caribe Royal.
The group left May 1. Acadia University said the tour was organized by an independent group.
Rios said some students witnessed the accident and the school is offering them support.
Scott Roberts, a spokesman for the school, said the university was informed Tuesday morning.
Roberts said Taylor was from Nova Scotia but wouldn't provide any more details about her death.
Graduation ceremonies are Sunday and Monday. The school said there will likely be a tribute to Taylor.
