Christy Clark took the opportunity to poke fun at the media’s reliance on polls at her post-election press conference Wednesday.
“You guys get this stuff for free,” she laughed. “You should take it for what it’s worth.”
The premier said she was not surprised the BC Liberals swept a majority in the May 14 election, citing her conversations with citizens across the province as the basis for her optimism.
“I had a better sense because I was talking to people every day,” she told reporters, adding, “You should try it sometime.”
“Pollsters do not get to choose the government. People make their own choices… and it’s a private matter.”
The turning point for her, she said, came at the leaders' TV debate, which saw 1.4 million people tune in.
She felt the momentum build daily following the live showdown. “I think that had an impact.”
The premier said she had no regrets about her campaign, despite losing her seat in Vancouver-Point-Grey to NDP opponent David Eby.
“We won the big war on this,” she said.
She refused to be drawn on plans for a byelection to secure her a seat in the Legislature, saying that no decision on that front would be made until the final vote tallies are published on May 27.
She also said she didn’t know when the B.C. Legislature would sit next, but that she imagined it would be after she found a way into the House.
