Alleged sex assault at grade school under investigation

Police in Port Hardy, on Vancouver Island, are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a girl by other students on the grounds of an elementary school last month.

The incident allegedly took place at Eagle View Elementary School during school hours on April 24, but school officials have not shared any information with parents.

"We were made aware by the RCMP of the allegation of sexual assault that may have occurred at Eagle View School on the school grounds,” said Katherine McIntosh, assistant superintendent of the Vancouver Island North School District.

“To date, they have not notified the school district as to the identity of any students who may have been involved. We will, however, be thoroughly reviewing the conclusion of the investigation to determine what actions we will take going forward based on the results of the investigation."

McIntosh admits the RCMP has not shared much information with the school district, but says students are safe.

“They [RCMP] have indicated, though, that they do not feel that there is an ongoing threat at Eagle View school and we do believe our students are safe."

Police say the investigation could take several months.
