EDMONTON -- Police say a hostage taking at the Edmonton courthouse is over.

Tactical officers responded to the downtown building shortly before noon.

Within two hours, however, police reported that the matter had "successfully concluded.''

Police would not confirm who was involved.

But a source told The Canadian Press that one female prisoner took another female prisoner hostage.

This is the third serious security incident in an Alberta court house in nearly as many months.

Elements of an explosive device were found inside the Calgary Courts Centre late last month. The device caused evacuations at the courts building and a large part of the downtown core but it was later discovered to be inert.

In late February, an Alberta sheriff was shot in the hand while on duty at the courthouse by a prisoner who, with the help of an accomplice, managed to escape in a sheriff van.

The two were apprehended soon after.
