Train travel back to normal after fatal crash in eastern Ontario

One person is dead after a Via train struck an individual walking on the tracks near the town of Alexandria, Ont. Friday morning.

The incident happened this morning near Glen Robertson and Massie Roads, OPP confirmed. Alexandria is about 100 km east of Ottawa, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

The collision happened at 7:30 a.m., said Via spokeswoman Mylene Belanger.

Via said the route between Ottawa and Montreal is now clear and all train travel will resume as planned.

The train had left Ottawa at 6 a.m. and was bound for Montreal at 8:30 a.m. There are 150 passengers on the train, Via confirmed.

OPP investigators are calling it a "non-suspicious, sudden death".

VIA said the person was a pedestrian.

The train has been waiting outside Alexandria for more than two hours since the incident, according to one passenger aboard the train.

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating.
