CALGARY - Calgary police have formally laid charges after an incident earlier this month in which two elderly pedestrians were struck by a driver who was trying to flee from police.

A police officer then opened fire, striking the driver in the face.

One of the pedestrians, a woman in her 70s, ended up in hospital with multiple broken bones.

Her husband, also in his 70s, suffered only minor injuries.

Jason Trevor Harron, 37, was charged Tuesday with two counts each of hit and run causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, flight from police causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, the Alberta Serious Incident Response team is investigating.

Harron is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
