A major Toronto artery, the Don Valley Parkway, has been closed due to flooding after the nearby Don River spilled its banks following heavy rains.
Commuter chaos is expected Wednesday morning with the shutdown of the DVP in both directions from the Gardiner Expressway to Bloor St. Police closed the highway at about 5 a.m.
“The water is still rising and we expect this closure to last throughout the day,” Staff Sgt. Brian Bowman told CP24. “We just have to wait for the water to subside.”
The commuter train service GO has been affected as well with water submerging tracks on the Richmond Hill line.
Just before 8 a.m. ET, city staff said the water had levelled off. Rob Burlie, manager of road operations at Toronto Transportation Services, told 680News he expected the flooding to fully recede by 11 a.m.
Much of the Greater Toronto Area is under a heavy rainfall warning, CBC reports. There also reports of flooding on Highway 27 at Rexdale and on Jane Street near Wilson Avenue.

It's not the first time the Don River has spilled its banks. On Aug. 19, 2005, the river spilled onto the DVP and numerous nearby roadways after 175 millimetres of rain fell in one afternoon, Stormchaser.ca reports. A crane and boats from the police marine unit were called in to help rescue people stranded by the flood waters.
