When Queen Maxima of the Netherlands was crowned in April during her husband, King Willem-Alexander's inauguration, we knew a rival to Kate Middleton had been spotted. (No, silly, we're not talking about rivals to the throne, we mean style-wise!)
While the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge has been wowing us with her modern take on classic day and evening wear, Maxima has been silently treading her own path to fashion fame.
The Dutch Queen was photographed at the opening of Fioretti College on May 29, in Hillegom, the Netherlands, wearing a belted coat with wide, cropped sleeves, a knee-length pencil skirt, toe-cap heels with see-through sides, a velvet purse and a smart black chapeau. And no Queen can be seen without her favourite pearl necklace! The blond beauty looked happy and kind of adorable cheering after setting off a tempest of streamers in the rain.

Maxima's smart rainwear (it was pouring at the school opening) is only the latest of her style successes: the 42-year-old made us take a second look at her optical illusion hat last week and she isn't afraid of showing off her legs. In fact, (dare we say it?) we may prefer to go shopping with the queen rather than with Kate! Blasphemy, we know.
But Middleton is providing stiff competition.
Princess Kate is taking maternity wear to new heights and giving all pregnant ladies a lesson in style (ahem, Kim Kardashian take note). Recently, the Duchess was spotted showing off her growing royal baby bump in a bright yellow coat, a polka-dot Topshop frock and a figure-hugging print Erdem dress.
Kate's style is so influential that designers she's never even met sketch maternity looks for her. (If Karl Lagerfeld designs a dress for you, you're in baby.)
Who do you think has better style?
