“It’s extremely unusual,” said TransLink spokesperson Derek Zabel.
"I can recall probably about a year ago a freight train was involved in a similar incident, but this type of situation is extremely unusual because trains are fairly loud and you've got your bright lights and that sort of thing. For this to happen is a very unfortunate situation."
Zabel says the condition of the bear has not been determined but no one on the train was injured in the crash.
The train was delayed by nearly half an hour as crews conducted an inspection.
