New Westminister gas leak halts traffic

Some residents in New Westminster were asked to open their windows this morning after construction crews ruptured a gas line near Merrivale Street and Royal Avenue.

Fire and rescue crews shut down several of the city's main streets as crews from Fortis B.C. canvassed the neighbourhood between Queens Avenue and Columbia Street, according to Blair Fryer, the communication manager for the City of New Westminster.

"What Fortis is doing is working with New Westminster fire going door to door just to check the gas system to make sure everything is operating to standard," said Fryer.

The leak has since been repaired and the roads have been reopened.
