L'actualite wins leading 6 golds at National Magazine Awards

TORONTO - L'actualite won a leading six gold prizes at the 36th National Magazine Awards on Friday night, while The Grid picked up five golds and The Walrus won four.

Gold, silver and honourable mention prizes were presented in 47 categories at the ceremony, hosted by Canadian actor Zaib Shaikh.

The magazine of the year prize went to Corporate Knights, a publication which looks at sustainable businesses. Honourable Mention for Magazine of the Year was awarded to Cottage Life, UPPERCASE and Urbania.

Meanwhile, Canadian House & Home's "Colour Issue" from March 2012 won the tablet magazine of the year. Magazine website of the year went to Hazlitt, Random House Canada's online literary magazine.

The Grid led all publications with seven total awards, including five golds.

Other Gold Award winners included: Adbusters, Avenue, Azure, Canada’s History, Canadian Notes & Queries, Corporate Knights, Elle Québec, Geist, Globe Style Advisor, Montecristo, Nouveau Projet, Sharp and The New Quarterly.

In determining the winners, judges sifted through some 2000 submissions from nearly 200 Canadian magazines.

Toronto Life led all publications with 29 nominations.
