After less than stellar performances with certain guest stars, The Rolling Stones called on Arcade Fire's Win Butler Sunday night at Montreal's Bell Centre.
The group brought out the singer for a rendition of "The Last Time" during their 50 & Counting... world tour after revealing the news on Friday, June 7. "Win Butler + @RollingStones + Montreal #specialguest #Stones50," Arcade Fire tweeted later that same day.
Butler -- dressed in white -- comes out early in the song and looks like a giant compared to both Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Butler harmonizes with Mick Jagger before looking like he briefly misses his cue for the next verse as Jagger looks towards the band.
Butler then drops his guitar on stage and Jagger -- perhaps for the first time in decades -- becomes a roadie, picking up the guitar and taking it to another stagehand. The song continues without a hitch as Jagger thanks Butler following the number. The song selection shouldn't have been a surprise given how Arcade Fire supported Jagger and performed the song during the 2011-12 season finale of "Saturday Night Live" when Jagger was host and musical guest.
The gig also coincided with the Montreal Grand Prix Formula 1 race earlier in the day, something not lost on Mick Jagger. "First time the Rolling Stones had the Grand Prix as a warm up act," he quipped.
The tour continues Wednesday night in Boston's TD Garden.
