Husband pleads guilty in Surrey newspaper stabbing

A 28-year-old man has pleaded guilty to stabbing his wife to death in broad daylight at her workplace two years ago.

Manmeet Singh will be sentenced for the second-degree murder of his 24-year-old wife, Ravinder Bhangu, later this month.

Defense and Crown lawyers have submitted a joint recommendation to the judge of life in prison with no parole for 16 years.

Bhangu was stabbed several times in the offices of the Sach Di Awaaz Indo-Canadian weekly newspaper, where she worked as an administrative assistant in July 2011.

A man who was in the offices of the newspaper at the time was wounded as he tried to intervene.

The attack took place a few months after the couple had split up, friends said at the time.

Dozens of people attended a memorial for the slain woman, including several who didn’t know her, but wanted to take a stand against violence against women.
