PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. - A Saskatchewan conservation officer killed last month when he stopped to help police with a car crash has been honoured posthumously.

The province has recognized Justin Knackstedt with the Saskatchewan Award of Excellence.

There was also a moment of silence before a medal presentation in Prince Albert for protective services workers, including firefighters, police officers and corrections staff.

Knackstedt died May 31 after he was hit by a driver who was allegedly impaired and fleeing from police.

About 200 conservation officers walked in a procession at his funeral in Quill Lake, Sask., on the weekend.
