A father and son are dead after a small plane crashed Thursday close to the airport at North Battleford, Sask.

The Transportation Safety Board confirmed it was a Piper PA-14 float plane that crashed this morning at the Cameron McIntosh Airport.

"There were two people aboard and the aircraft was destroyed in a post-impact fire," Chris Krepski, from the board, said Thursday.

The RCMP confirm Shane Buchanan, 40, and his father, Charles Buchanan, 63, from Yukon, died.

Shane Buchanan was a pilot and co-owner of Moon Lake Outfitters, the Whitehorse-based company to which the plane was registered.

Paramedics said they were called to the airport east of the city of 14,000 at around 10:21 a.m. CST. When crews arrived, the plane was engulfed in flames.

The fire was put out and two people were pulled from the plane, but were pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly before the crash, the plane had taken off from a nearby lake.

RCMP Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said the plane was on its way to Calling Lake, Alta. The plane was briefly airborne and then crashed on the grass near the runway.

"The witnesses that we have spoken to observed the plane falling… not in a normal flying pattern," Grabinsky said. "It wasn't flying down, it appeared to be falling down."

Grabinsky said the fire was put out within 10 minutes.

The cause of the crash isn't known. The RCMP and Transport Canada are investigating. The airport will be closed while investigators collect evidence.
