Logan Couture, Sharks agree to contract extension: reports

Logan Couture has agreed to terms on a new contract extension with the San Jose Sharks, according to multiple media reports.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and it cannot be officially signed until July 5. The forward just completed the first season of a two-year pact worth $5.75 million US, and was set to become a restricted free agent after next season.

The 24-year-old had a strong 2013 campaign, scoring 21 goals and 16 assists in 48 games for San Jose. The Guelph, Ont., native was a key contributor in the sixth-place club's surprising run to the Western Conference semifinal, where the Sharks took the Los Angeles Kings to seven games, but fell in the deciding tilt.

Couture had a post-season best, five power-play goals and added six assists in 11 playoff contests this year.

Originally selected by the Sharks in 2007 in the first round (ninth overall), he has been San Jose's leading scorer the past two seasons.

In 232 career regular-season games, he has 89 goals and 78 assists is a plus-31.
