MONCTON, N.B. - A new sports and entertainment complex in Moncton, N.B., is a step closer to reality after city council approved the purchase of a downtown mall property.

A city council majority gave the green light to buy the now-closed Highfield Square mall property during a meeting Monday.

Council has set a budget of $12 million to buy, demolish and clean up the site.

Construction of the proposed sports and entertainment complex still needs council approval.

The city will now request construction proposals from the two companies shortlisted for the project, Ellis Don Corp. and Bird Construction.
