Dr. Barbara Yaffe, the city's associate medical officer of health, issued a heat alert on Sunday.
It remains in effect until further notice.
People living in Toronto were asked to check in on family, friends and neighbours to ensure that all are staying cool and drinking enough fluids.
The city issued a news release listing tips for staying cool. They include:
- Drinking lots of cool water before you feel thirsty.
- Staying in air-conditioned places.
- Taking cool showers or baths, or alternatively using cool, wet towels.
- Wearing light, breathable clothing and using a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
- Staying out of the sun and sticking to the shade.
- Planning outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.
- Taking care to ensure that children, seniors and pets are not left unattended in vehicles.
