FREDERICTON - A group in Fredericton is calling for a public meeting to discuss the impact of a potential shale gas industry in the province.

About a dozen members of the Council of Canadians stood in front of the constituency office of Energy Minister Craig Leonard today in Fredericton and left a 400-name petition seeking a town hall meeting in the city.

Group spokesman Mark D'Arcy says Agriculture Minister Mike Olscamp had a similar meeting in his riding this spring and people in Fredericton deserve to get the same information.

He says the capital city is surrounded by land where the gas companies want to explore.

Most of the people in the group carried anti-shale gas signs.

Leonard was not at the office this morning.
