'Friends' flee after targeted man gunned down in Abbotsford

Police have identified the victim of a targeted drive-by shooting in Abbotsford as 25-year-old Harpreet Chahal.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Chahal was the man gunned down Sunday afternoon near the intersection of South Fraser Way and Emerson Street around 5:15 p.m. PT.

Witnesses in the area described seeing shots fired from one vehicle into another as the two vehicles were travelling westbound on South Fraser Way.

When police arrived, they found Chahal wounded and unresponsive inside a black Mercedes in a nearby parking lot.

First responders attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead 45 minutes later at the hospital.

Pound said that Chahal was known to police and his murder was related to gang activity.

She also said that there were others in the Mercedes with Chahal, who fled after the shooting. Police are trying to identify them and would like anyone with information to help.

"This shooting occurred in a very public area where innocent people could have easily become victims. We are urging anyone with information to come forward and speak with investigators," Pound said in a written statement.
