Air Canada Rouge Adds More Destinations

As Air Canada's low-cost carrier Rouge prepares for its July 1 launch, its parent company has entrusted it with several additional major holiday destinations, The Canadian Press reports.

Rouge will begin service with its two Airbus A319 and two Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, flying to places like Edinburgh, Venice, and a couple of locations in Cuba, according to a press release.

But to help expand its network to the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America — reaching 23 destinations by the end of the 2013-2014 holiday season — Rouge will have six additional planes by the end of 2013 and four more by March 2014, the CBC reports.

"Once Air Canada Rouge completes its inaugural summer season to Edinburgh, Venice, Athens and a number of Caribbean destinations, its flying will expand southward for the winter to an additional 13 destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico and select U.S. holiday markets," Air Canada CEO Calin Rovinescu said in a news release.

Rovinescu said the carrier wants to start in the summer, even if the launch is gradual, as it's the company's strongest season.

Despite the gradual launch, Rouge is aiming for a little sizzle in its summer flights with a new wireless in-flight entertainment system, the Financial Post reports.

Passengers will be able to stream TV shows, movies and music on their personal devices for $5 on economy and for free on Rouge Plus, the airline's premium cabin.

But the quality and accessibility of streaming will depend on what devices are used. Laptops running Windows software, for example, will just need a plug-in to start streaming.

Users with Apple products, however, will need to download a special app before the flight to use the system.
