The first rescued seal pup of 2013 has arrived at the Vancouver Aquarium. Named Red Square by aquarium staff, the newborn seal is described as "feisty".

Red Square was spotted near Victoria, on a private beach in Finnerty Cove, by a resident who noticed the pup was without a mother and suckling on a log. Vancouver Aquarium Rescue Centre staff talked the concerned woman through a series of safe retrieval steps, culminating in flying the seal to Vancouver.

“Although he arrived underweight and malnourished, he was a fighter and very vocal, which are positive signs,” Lindsaye Akhurst, manager of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, said in a press release.

“Provided we can stabilize him, the plan will be to provide him with the nourishment he needs to gain strength and weight, teach him how to forage and, hopefully, return him to his natural habitat in the next few months.”

Red Square still sported a soft white fur, called lanugo, when he arrived, suggesting to staff that he was born prematurely. He is currently being hand-fed a nutrient-rich formula five times per day and is closely monitored by the veterinary team, the press release states.

The Vancouver Aquarium Rescue Centre receives and treats approximately 150 animals every year.
