One week after a massive flood washed away homes, roads and highways, leaving the national park town virtually cut off, Banff is ready to celebrate Canada Day.
Banff Lake Louise Tourism announced that Banff and Lake Louise will host a full slate of events to mark Canada's birthday and to celebrate "the spirit of resilience."
“Our hearts remain heavy for those who suffered during this very challenging time,” said Julie Canning, President & CEO of Banff Lake Louise Tourism.
“The communities of Banff and Lake Louise extend their gratitude for the unshakeable resilience of our fellow Albertans."
The town of Banff was mostly spared direct flood damage but it was left without power and low in supplies after all traffic in and out the town was cut off after the TransCanada Highway and Highway 93 were closed down.
Many visitors were stranded in the town, while area residents away at the time of the flood were unable to return home.
Just minutes down the road, the mountain town of Canmore was the site of massive evacuations, immense destruction and now sports a forever changed landscape.
“In the face of recent events, it seems only fitting that we welcome Albertans to join us on Canada Day in the original place our nation set aside to both celebrate and protect nature,” said Karen Sorensen, mayor of the Town of Banff.
At the heart of many of the events taking place Canada Day long weekend in the park are fundraising events to help Banff-area communities get back on their feet.
Events include live music and a silent auction at the Banff Gondola on Sunday, concerts at the Banff Centre, as well as pancake breakfasts, parade and a summer polar bear dip.
Banff's link to its nearest major centre, the TransCanada to Calgary, was only opened on Wednesday, more than six days after it was shut down due to heavy damage.
