Buckingham Palace revealed renovations to Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A have cost British taxpayers £1million so far, according to the Mirror. Upgrades have included asbestos removal and roof repairs.

The royal couple, who still don’t know the sex of their baby, are shelling out their own private cash for the décor, the Daily Mail said. Kate Middleton, reportedly due in mid-July, has recently been spotted browsing for antiques, and shopping for fabrics for her nursery at a high-end interiors store.
A spokesperson for Will and Kate defended the Kensington Palace costs, saying the renovations were necessary.
‘This essential structural work needed to be completed whoever moved in. The last major works in the apartment took place around the time that Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon moved in more than 50 years ago,’ the representative told the Daily Mail.
The 57-room space has lately been used as an office and for storage by Historic Royal Palaces. .
