Man's 9-metre fall prompts police probe

The province's police watchdog is looking into an incident in Nanaimo that left a man severely injured after he fell off a ledge.

The Independent Investigations Office says a Nanaimo RCMP officer was on a foot patrol at around 2 a.m. PT, when he announced himself to a man who was standing near a ledge in a parking lot.

The man then fell off the ledge, landing nine metres below. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The IIO will investigate what role the police officer may have played in the man's fall.
