TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Friday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,462.17 down 31.09 points):

Medicago Inc. (TSX:MDG). Biotechnology. Up 20 cents, or 21.05 per cent, at $1.15 on 30.07 million shares. Japan's Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma plans to take a majority interest in Quebec vaccine developer Medicago in a friendly transaction valued at $357 million.

Surge Energy Inc. (TSX:SGY). Oil and gas. Up 15 cents, or 2.67 per cent, at $5.77 on 5.25 million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Down 34 cents, or 1.87 per cent, at $17.80 on 4.23 million shares.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Unchanged at $4.91 on 3.84 million shares.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX:CNQ). Oil and gas. Down 18 cents, or 0.54 per cent, at $33.11 on 3.75 million shares.

Toronto Venture Exchange (898.42 up 4.51 points):

Brookemont Capital Inc. (TSXV:BKT). Metals and mining. Up a penny, or 25 per cent, at five cents on 15.78 million shares.

Renegade Petroleum Ltd. (TSXV:RPL). Oil and gas. Up four cents, or 3.42 per cent, at $1.21 on 7.69 million shares. The junior explorer announced Thursday that it cut its monthly dividend by half to 0.8 of a cent per share from 1.9 cents per share to strengthen its financial position as part of its strategic review process. The Calgary-based company also confirmed its 2013 production guidance.

Domtar Corp. (TSX:UFS). Paper. Down $1.66, or 2.18 per cent, at $74.59 on 50,696 shares after the company warned that it expects to post an operating loss of between US$30 million and US$35 million when it reports its second-quarter results later this month.

Scotiabank (TSX:BNS). Bank. Up 11 cents, or 0.19 per cent, at $57.05 on 1.53 million shares on news Canada's most international bank has withdrawn its application to acquire a 19.99 per cent stake in China’s Bank of Guangzhou.
