EDMONTON - Police have charged a woman after a toddler was allegedly left unattended in a vehicle for close to an hour outside a grocery store.

The 29-year-old woman from Drayton Valley is charged with child abandonment for the alleged incident on May 27.

Police in Edmonton say the charges result from a joint investigation with Drayton Valley RCMP.

Edmonton police Sgt. Elli McEvoy says too many people seem to think that a locked vehicle is a safe place for a child to be left.

He says a vehicle is not a babysitter and children are not safe when they are left alone.

Police urge anyone who sees a child left in a vehicle to call 911.

"Police take this crime very seriously. Whenever the situation calls for it, we will be laying charges against negligent parents and guardians," McEvoy said in a news release.
