EDMONTON - They say the wet weather brings out the cockroaches, or in this case, the criminals intent on exploiting a disaster for profit.

Edmonton police are warning the public about a flood fundraising scam.

Sgt. Mike Walkom says the department alleges that a week ago, a young blonde woman set up a booth at a city shopping mall and sold donuts, telling people the proceeds would go to flood victims in Calgary.

Walkom says the woman wouldn't take cash, just credit cards, but police allege the information from those cards was then compromised.

Walkom says the total of fraudulent charges is in the thousands of dollars and expected to grow.

Any other possible victims are urged to contact police.
