North York apartment fire death a homicide, police say

An elderly woman found among the charred remains of a two-alarm apartment fire in North York over the weekend is being investigated as a homicide, Toronto police said today.

Firefighters were called to a residential building near Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue just after 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Police said the 72-year-old's body was found within the apartment unit after the blaze was extinguished. A cause of death has not been released.

The woman's identity is also being withheld until a next-of-kin has been notified.
