A newborn baby is in serious condition in hospital in Saskatoon, after being delivered early following a car crash. Shortly after the birth, the child's mother died.

Police in Prince Albert, Sask., where the crash took place, reported the circumstances of the child's birth Monday.

The crash happened at the intersection of 28th Street and 12th Avenue East in Prince Albert shortly after 2:30 a.m. CST Sunday. According to police, Brandy Lepine, 17, was the mother of the baby. She was a passenger in the car that was involved in the crash. The driver, Taylor Litwin, 21, also died in the crash. Police said she died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle, a 21-year-old man, is in custody, facing two charges of impaired driving causing death.

Jeremiah Jobb made a court appearance earlier today and is due in court again in one week.
