A Nanaimo man faces criminal charges after allegedly dragging two dogs behind a pickup truck.

Two pit bulls, one a puppy, the other an older dog, were allegedly tied to the back of the truck and dragged a short distance last Friday at around 3 p.m. in Cedar, a small town near Nanaimo, RCMP said in a news release.

The puppy required immediate medical treatment for shock and raw patches on his legs and shoulders. The older dog was able to keep up with the truck and was unharmed.

Police arrested the 27-year-old suspect after examining the animals. He has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and has been released on a promise to appear in court. He is to have no contact with animals in the interim.

The dogs are not owned by the suspect, but are owned by family members.
