Fireworks are likely to blame for a brush fire that forced the evacuation of five homes in West Kelowna on Saturday night, officials say.

Flames came within metres of the homes on Weatherhill Road, but crews were able to get it under control after it had grown to about two hectares, although it is not completely contained.

A helicopter and air tankers were brought in to attack the aggressive fire.

Several witnesses say fireworks were being set off in the area.
