CHARLOTTETOWN - The leader of the New Democrats in Prince Edward Island will run in a Charlottetown area seat in the next provincial election.

Mike Redmond, who lives in a suburb of the city, says he'll be running in the provincial riding of Charlottetown-Victoria Park.

His party currently holds no seats in the provincial legislature.

The party leader made the announcement during the riding association's second annual barbecue.

The riding is currently represented by Richard Brown, a former environment minister in the Liberal government.

Redmond, a former University of Prince Edward Island soccer coach, says he has strong roots in the riding and has many friends and relatives living in the area.
